French Onion Burgers (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Burger Patties

01 - 1½ pounds ground beef
02 - 1 packet (4–6 tablespoons) Lipton Onion Soup Mix

→ Caramelized Onions

03 - 2½ tablespoons butter
04 - 2 large onions, thinly sliced
05 - A pinch of thyme
06 - ¾ cup water, as needed
07 - 1 tablespoon brandy or Sherry (optional but recommended)

→ Assembly

08 - 4 to 8 ounces Swiss or Provolone cheese
09 - 4 burger buns
10 - Butter or oil for toasting buns

# Instructions:

01 - In a bowl, mix the ground beef with the onion soup mix. Set aside to rest while you cook the onions.
02 - Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, thyme, and about ¼ cup of water. Cover and simmer for 3–4 minutes until onions are soft. Remove the lid and continue to cook, stirring frequently, adding splashes of water as needed to avoid burning. When onions are deep golden and caramelized, stir in brandy or Sherry, then remove from heat.
03 - Shape the beef into 4 patties, pressing a small dent in the center of each. Cook on a medium-hot skillet or grill for 3 minutes on the first side. Flip, top each with onions and cheese, and cook another 2–4 minutes to your preferred doneness. Cover briefly if needed to melt the cheese.
04 - Brush the cut sides of the buns with butter or oil and toast in a hot skillet or on the grill until golden.
05 - Place each burger patty on a toasted bun and serve warm.

# Notes:

01 - For more flavor, don’t skip the brandy or sherry—it adds a rich finish to the onions.
02 - This recipe makes 4 burgers, but it’s easy to scale for more or fewer servings.
